MOPGEL Volunteer Program:
Home stay-volunteer live with host family and pay ($10) per day for hosting and feeding. Organizational development fee of ($100) would be paid monthly. (Minimum duration of stay would be 1month and maximum duration would be 12 months)

MOPGEL goal is the promotion of gender equality in Liberia and covers a wide range of activities. This includes raising the awareness for the importance of gender equality issues, the rights of women, youth, children and disabled persons in Liberia. In order to enhance the employment possibilities for both women and men, MOPGEL has since December 2003 been involved with information communication technology ICT, education, vocational training, economic empowerment general health and environmental training.
Besides, MOPGEL researches, monitors and documents violations of gender inequality and publish the results. MOPGEL advocates for gender sensitivity to be included in policies and laws.
As part of its out reach activities, MOPGEL creates school and community gender clubs and target to establish schools and Vocational training centers throughout Liberia. To propagate its programs and activities and to enable target beneficiaries tell their own stories, the Equality Trumpet Newspaper was established.
The organization currently doesn’t have an internet access yet that the volunteer could use, but internet access in the community is available.
MOPGEL would like to fill the following volunteer positions. If you would like to get involve.
Community and School Gender Club Supervisors
Tasks:
- Support the gender clubs in schools and communities regarding the promotion of gender equality
- Empower teachers and community leaders to apply a gender equality approach
- Launch and conduct workshops
- Prepare supporting material/ documents for the workshops
Profile of volunteer:
- Social worker or advanced student in social sciences with a good knowledge of gender equality issues
- Some experience in the implementation of gender equality would be very welcome
- Well-organised person following a practical approach
- Good communicator and moderator
Environmental and Sanitation Supervisors
Tasks:
- Train staff/ local volunteers on environmental and sanitation issues such as environmental protection, waste management, hygiene, animal welfare etc
- Empower teachers and community leaders to apply a gender equality approach
- Develop and conduct workshops
- Prepare supporting material/ documents for the workshops
Profile of volunteer:
- Graduate or advanced student in environmental, sanitation or health sciences with a good knowledge of gender equality issues
- Well-organised person following a practical approach
- Good communicator and moderator
- be someone who can work well with young people coming from a difficult social background
Community Clinic Worker
Tasks:
- Provide support for the clinic staff for the treatment of patients and illnesses in their daily work,
- Conduct tests, analysis in the laboratory
Profile of volunteer:
- Doctor, nurse or advanced student in medical sciences or nursery; laboratory technicians or pharmaceutical workers,
- Knowledge of tropical diseases would be an advantage
- Be willing to work in an environment with very basic/ limited equipment and machinery
The volunteer may choose which shift he would like to take (the clinic operates in three shifts)
Computer Trainers
Tasks:
- Provide training for the (future) local computer trainers
- Teach the different modules in a 4-weeks course for the software programmes, ca 8 weeks for the computer network course and ca. 12 weeks for the course on hardware
Profile of volunteer:
- Extensive knowledge of at least one of the MS software programmes Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Corel Draw, PageMaker, Publisher and/ or
- Proficient knowledge of networking and/ or computer hardware
- Some teaching experience for computer software would be desirable
Pre-Primary and Primary School Teachers
Tasks:
- Teach Mathematics, English, Social Studies, Hygiene, Natural Sciences, Sports
- Provide support for the local teachers for the improvement of their teaching methods
- Provide additional training assistance to the pupils
Profile of volunteer:
- Teacher or advanced student in teaching
- Experience in teaching is highly desirable
- be someone who can work well with young people coming from a difficult social background
Equality Trumpet Newspaper Journalists
Tasks:
- Provide media skills training for local volunteers and staff members
- Train in photojournalism, investigative, human rights, environmental and feature writing.
Profile of volunteer(s)
- Broad knowledge in specialized area of journalism
- Proficient knowledge of editing news, reporting
- Teaching experience for journalism would be desirable
Fundraisers
Tasks:
- Research on possible funding possibilities for the ongoing and planned projects
- Contact potential donors
- Write project proposals
Profile of volunteer:
- Extensive knowledge on development aid policy
- Good knowledge of the funding programmes available for the developing countries
- good analytical and drafting skills
- be a good communicator and negotiator
- Experience in fundraising and proposal writing
Organisational Management and Proposal Writing Trainers
Tasks:
- Give training workshops for staff members
- Empower the staff to implement efficient management methods and to apply for project funding
- Teach the staff on organisational and strategic planning, process optimisation and on project proposal writing
- Provide know-how in general administration, accounting and finance and budgetary planning
Profile of volunteer:
- Extensive knowledge on development aid policy
- Degree in public or business administration is desirable, but not obligatory
- Have some experience in capacity-building for institutions
- Knowledge of the funding programmes available for the developing countries
- Experience in fundraising and proposal writing
- Be in the position to follow a practical approach and to train people in an efficient way according to the actual requirements
Women, Youth and Disabled Leadership Trainers
Tasks:
- Promotion of and awareness raising of the importance of the empowerment of women, youth and disabled persons
- Work towards the development of leadership of women, youth and disabled persons to run their own businesses and to earn their livelihood
- Launch and conduct workshops for staff of women, youth and disabled departments/ organisations at the refugee camp as well as for community leaders, students and residents
- Prepare supporting material/ documents for the workshops
The volunteer will work together with two local volunteers on the preparation of the workshops.
Profile of volunteer:
- Social worker or advanced student in social sciences with a good knowledge of gender equality issues and works with women, youth and disabled persons
- Some experience in the implementation of equality policies would be an advantage
- Well-organised person following a practical approach
- Good communicator and moderator
Administrative Assistant
Tasks:
- Help with the development of an efficient system of social service administration and on efficiency increase of the organisation
- Work together with the finance staff on budgetary issues
- Draft letters and provide other general administrative assistance
Profile of volunteer:
- Accomplished administrative incl. financial training
- Work experience in administrative/ finance positions
- have some experience in capacity-building for institutions
- have good analytical skills
- be a trustable and honest person
Requirement for all these positions: The volunteer should have a strong interest in refugee issues, be flexible, tolerant, and demonstrate initiative and enthusiasm. She/ he must be aware that she/ he will live in very basic conditions with no running water and sporadic electricity and that working equipment will be rather simple.
Besides, she/ he must have a stable character/ strong personality and be aware that while living in the refugee camp she/he will be close to the daily difficulties the refugees are facing and to the social hardship. |
