Help Save Abandoned Child
By: Dorbor Marvie
Some of the root causes that lead to teenagers becoming mothers are peer pressure, poverty and lack of parental care. The Buduburam Refugee Community in Accra, Ghana is one of the communities experiencing this age old problem of teenage pregnancy, and it is on the increase here. Most of the teen mothers abandon their babies due to lack of support from the community and the children’s fathers.
One of these abandoned children was left at the St. Gregory Catholic Clinic on April 29, 2005. He was eleven months old. The Clinic named him “Mark Johnson” and informed the Liberian Refugee Welfare Council about the child. The Council thereafter informed the Women’s Department to see who could help with the child, but nobody was willing.

One year after “Mark Johnson” was born, May Kennedy-Moisema, coordinator for the Council’s Women’s Department, volunteered to take him. After taking the child, the Social Welfare Department sub-office located at the Buduburam Refugee Camp was informed. The office then wrote the United Nations Refugee Agency, UNHCR, and the authorities there promised some assistance.
Ms. Moisema never received the assistance promised. “Since I couldn’t get help from the UNHCR, I was forced to turn my back on volunteer work at the Liberian Refugee Welfare Council in order to raise this child who is now three years old”, she mourned.
Mrs. Moisema said that she appealed to a number of organizations on many occasions to help support the child, but all appeals have been ignored. Though her appeals fell on deaf ears, she is determined to care for Little Mark.
